Dr. Eva Shipp
- Dr. Shipp’s "Why"
As an adolescent, I sustained a severe back injury on-the-job. It triggered a chain of events leading to two subsequent re-injuries: one while working as an undergraduate in archeology and one due to a crash with a large truck. This taught me at least two key lessons. First, kids can have back injuries at work and related chronic pain isn’t simply due to “growing.” Second, musculoskeletal injuries can heal but some of these injuries have life-long consequences that impact quality of life, including career choices. These experiences have influenced my research, outreach and education activities from graduate school to present day. I don’t want others to go through what I did. These events can be prevented.
- Favorite Project
Favorite project My Southwest AgCRASH project, funded through the Southwest Center for Agricultural Health Injury Prevention, and Education / NIOSH. This project developed a model system to support surveillance and research of injuries resulting from crashes with farm equipment and logging trucks. Based on data from this project, we received additional funding to develop outreach and educational materials targeting logging truck drivers.
